Marketing brilliance doesn’t happen by accident, but with a stellar digital marketer on your side, you can add a bit of rocket fuel to your business’s performance
As a freelance copywriter, I’ve spent quite a bit of time working with marketing professionals and digital marketing agencies. The relationship between a copywriter and a marketer, especially a digital marketer, is complimentary. Marketers put in place the action plan to promote and build businesses, while copywriters provide the words that help to bring ideas to life.
I’ve been in a privileged position to observe how marketers work and how they interact with their clients. Here’s what I’ve come to understand about marketing professionals, and how you can spot the great ones.
1. A great marketing professional will take the time to understand your business
They’ll spend time with you discussing the ins and outs of your business and getting a comprehensive idea of your needs, future direction, what makes you and your business tick and understanding your values.
This understanding should form the core of any proposed strategy and you’ll probably love the fact that they’ve taken the time to build these foundations.
2. A great marketing professional is there for the long haul, not the quick sell
Selling a service and then moving on may be a great way to make a quick buck, but it’s not a reliable way to secure an ongoing income stream or a good flow of clients. A great marketer, or digital agency, will seek to build a longer-term partnership with you that will ebb and flow – sometimes you’ll need marketing, sometimes you won’t. But when you do, you’re going to call the marketer with whom you’ve built a relationship. Not the person who got you to buy a useless service and then disappeared
3. A great marketing professional is passionate about, and believes in, what they do
Great marketers know that well-executed marketing strategies can have a huge impact on business success. Through honed experience, they believe in what they do and they love it. If you find a marketer (or a marketing agency) who’s passionate about marketing, you’re pretty much assured that they’re also thinking about your business, whether they’re in a meeting with you or not.
And someone who’s doing that much thinking is bound to be generating some great strategies for your business.
4. A great marketing professional isn’t afraid to change tack
Like any experts, we expect marketers to get it right. Most of the time, at least. And while that may happen most of the time, sometimes a strategy doesn’t work, or isn’t working quite as well as hoped. You know the saying – there’s no point in flogging a dead horse.
A marketer who’s prepared to change tack for the good of your business is a marketer who’s going the extra mile. And that’s a big plus.
5. A great marketing professional has a great team to make things happen by magic
So often, business operators are overwhelmed by the huge task of managing day-to-day operations. You know you need to be sending out that newsletter, but how do you find the time? And you really need to upgrade your website but it’s just too big a job and anyway, you don’t know where to start.
A great marketing professional already has a team in place, ready to take on these jobs. Whether it’s website development, graphic design, copywriting, photography, SEO, Google Ads or even event planning, a marketing professional will know how to get the work done. And they won’t suggest a marketing strategy if they don’t already know how it should be implemented.
In short, they can make things happen as if by magic.
This takes away the stress of trying to find people to help you implement a marketing strategy and it lets you get back to running your business.
There’s no doubt that a great marketing professional is worth their weight in gold, especially for the peace of mind they can bring to your daily work life. If you’re looking for a great marketing professional to help promote your business, give me a call. I’m happy to refer you.
